Week 2 On Earth: Hanging On and Moving Up

It's official, according to Nathan's night nurse,
he's the quietest baby in the room.
We hope it stays that way when it's time to
take him home.
Speaking of that, another nurse told us that
we might take him home in 3-4 weeks.
His feedings are 34cc.
His current weight is 3lbs and 7oz.
He's no longer in an incubator.
He's now in an isolette.
The next step:
He's working on drinking through a bottle.
He had his first bottle today with no
problems. He will be drinking out of
a bottle once a day to practice.
We'll see how he does next week.

And now for some pics:

10 Days Old

Nathan is little over 10 days old.
He's a fighter.
We can't believe how he's doing everyday.
As of today, he's 15 inches tall and weighs: 3lbs 4oz.
His feedings are at 31cc.
He no longer has any oxygen support
or any IV.
I think he wants to go home as soon as possible.
The nurses keep telling us that he's a quiet
peaceful boy. Let's see if that ever changes.
Mommy is doing a lot better with her blood pressure.
She was able to go to the hospital today to spend
a lot of time with Nathan. Mommy took him a bath
and changed his clothes.
Daddy sees Nathan everyday after work.
Both can't wait to bring him home.

Birth: The Arrival of the Little Guy

Our Little Monster is Here!!
So unexpectedly soon.

Here's the story of how it all went down:

How do we begin this?
It was a frightening day full of emotions.
There was fear, sadness, shockness, and
last but not least, happiness.
Around 3 am, Linda woke up with a terrible headache.
She couldn't go back to sleep.
She never experienced this kind of headache before.
We just ran out of Tylenol and we were tired.
So, I tried to calm her down.
We sat in the living room just talking.
Finally, we decided to go to CVS pharmacy
that's open 24hrs.
There, Linda took a blood pressure test.
It came out to 183.
According to the chart, that's not good.
She called her 24 hour nurse and told her about it.
The nurse advised us to go straight to the hospital
(the women's center).
This was about 4:30 a.m.
At the hospital, nurses ran tests on Linda.
Her blood pressure was taken and this
time it was 209.
The nurses were telling us what to expect.
That's when I called, Linda's mom,
because there was a chance that we were going to have
this baby today.
After several tests and questions,
our doctor came in and told Linda
that she had severe preeclampsia.
The only cure and the best thing for Linda
and Nathan was to get Nathan out of there.
Linda was 30 weeks pregnant.
So Nathan would be about 2 months premature.
Usually, with a mild preeclampsia, a woman
can go home and be on bedrest for the rest
of the pregnancy. Now, if it's severe,
that's a big risk for a seizure or a stroke and possibly
a coma.
That's when we informed several people about the baby.
We expected the best and the worst.
It was 12:35 p.m when the Cesarean section process started.
Linda was medicated and I was chewing lots of bubble gum
for the nerves.
At 12:43 p.m. we heard some noises and one of them was
a cry from a little baby.
I saw the nurses putting the baby on the side.
One of them told me to go over and see the newborn.
That moment, was speechless.
I can't even write what I want to say.
I guess, those who are fathers, understand.
But, I'll give it a try.
It's kind of like a flash before your eyes.
Like you were all of a sudden, born again.
It's a magic moment.
Nathan was born 3lbs 1oz.
Height: Roughly 14 inches.
He was moving, kicking, and crying for a long time.
They showed Nathan to the new Mommy.
Pure emotions.
After they cleaned him, they placed him inside the
incubator and rolled up to the incubator room.
Linda told me before the surgery to go follow the baby.
So I did.
On the way to the room, in the hallway,
there was 4 nurses around him.
I stayed behind them and said,
"Be careful, that's the future president of the United States."
It felt good.
The nurses and doctors were doing all these tests on him
to make sure there's was no major complications.
I went back to Linda to make sure she was okay.
She was resting with lots of medicine.
That was pretty much the whole day.
Watching both Linda and Nathan resting and recovering.
Linda's blood pressure went down.
She'll be in the hospital for another few days.
Nathan is stable.
Doing good and normal for a 2 month premature.
They put his oxygen to a minimum because
he is, for the most part, breathing on his own.
All we can do is wait for him to grow a little more.
We're expecting to bring him home around March.
If not, sooner, depending how fast he matures.
We will have a "Welcome Home Party" for the
arrival of the Little Guy.
